The long-awaited redevelopment of Thebarton Theatre is well underway, marking a significant milestone for one of South Australia’s most cherished cultural landmarks.
With a joint investment of $8 million from the City of West Torrens and the State Government, this transformative project is ensuring the theatre remains a vibrant hub for generations to come.
As the theatre nears its 100 year anniversary in 2028, the extensive upgrades will enhance the experience for both performers and audiences.
The development includes a brand-new foyer and entranceway, giving the venue a fresh, modern appeal while improving accessibility and in a major step towards inclusivity, a lift is being installed for the first time in the theatre’s history. Complementing these changes is an outdoor plaza, designed to create a welcoming atmosphere for patrons before and after performances and provide space for outdoor events.
Thebarton Theatre has played an integral role in South Australia’s cultural landscape since its opening on June 11, 1928. Designed by Sydney-based theatre architects Kaberry and Chard.
Initially, it functioned as a cinema under D. Clifford Theatres Ltd, screening films under the names Thebarton Star and later Odeon Star.
However, over the years, it has evolved into a premier live performance venue, hosting an array of local and international music acts, theatre productions, and special events.
The line up of events in 2025 starts in October with the likes of Sooshi Mango and Marcia Hines.
Mayor Michael Coxon highlighted the significance of the redevelopment to ensure that the building remains a vibrant part of the cultural fabric for years to come.
“The redevelopment and updating of this iconic theatre is a celebration of its rich history and a forward-looking investment in its future.
This redevelopment aligns with a broader vision to rejuvenate Henley Beach Road, injecting new life into the surrounding precinct.
Mayor Coxon emphasised that the theatre’s upgrade is a key step in this initiative, ensuring Thebarton Theatre continues to be a premier performance venue in South Australia.
With completion expected later this year, the revamped Thebarton Theatre will blend history with modern innovation, securing its place as an iconic entertainment destination for future generations.
