From the bright lights of the AFL to the tranquil fields of the Barossa Valley, Wade Kingsley’s journey is one of reinvention and reconnection as he channels his passion into a blossoming new venture, a stunning dahlia farm.
Born and raised in the Barossa, Wade grew up in Angaston as one of five siblings and was a talented athlete when it comes to football, basketball, and cricket.
Drafted to North Melbourne in 1996 alongside his twin brother, Wade’s AFL career was cut short by injuries, but his love for the outdoors and adventure never faltered.
This led him to embark on a diverse and globetrotting career, including working overseas as a personal assistant for Elle Macpherson, training as a scuba diving instructor and working on the Great Barrier Reef, before transitioning into roles with the Department of Fisheries and the Australian Defence Force.
Wade’s career was as varied as it was exciting but his heart remained tethered to the Barossa.
Inspired by his grandmother, who created simple floral gifts for nursing homes, Wade has found healing and purpose in floristry and horticulture after an impressive and diverse history.
Establishing a dahlia farm in the Barossa came with its challenges—South Australia’s scorching heat tested his crops, particularly the young plants.
Yet, Wade’s determination is seeing his vision blossom into a promising enterprise. Now, as his dahlias flourish, the farm is poised to open its gates to the public in 2025.
This April marks an exciting chapter for Wade’s dahlia farm as visitors will soon be able to stroll through vibrant fields, pick their own blooms, and partaking in curated workshops. Collaborations with local artisans promise unique experiences for both locals and travellers.
For Wade, dahlias are more than flowers; they symbolise joy, resilience, and the power of simple gestures to bring people together.
As Wade’s dahlia farm prepares to bloom, it’s not just a story of flowers but of life’s remarkable ability to reinvent and flourish in the most unexpected ways.
Wade will soon be welcoming visitors to his farm gate in Marananga School, a stones throw away from iconic restaurant, Staguni.
Keep an eye on this Barossa gem as it grows into something truly extraordinary.
