When winemaker Brendan Carter met Henry Doyle four years ago, he saw an opportunity, not just to teach Henry about wine, but to rethink how wine is experienced altogether. Fast forward to today, and the pair are preparing to launch Bottle Shock, a bold new wine concept that aims to shatter the pretentious image of wine and make it fun, engaging, and accessible for everyone.

Bottle Shock is set to become Adelaide’s go-to destination for both seasoned wine lovers and total beginners.

The concept is simple: take the mystery out of wine by encouraging exploration and discovery. The space will offer gamified wine tastings, where guests can rank wines by price, region, or personal preference, set in the laid back venue.

Think recycled plastic tables, a nod to the sustainability ethos of Unico Zelo and bright colours, buzzing energy, and an upbeat soundtrack of ‘80s pop hits.

The space will be stocked with local cheeses and charcuterie, inviting guests to grab a snack and settle in without any formality.

With all that said and done, the heart of Bottle Shock is its wine list, a carefully curated selection of local, national, and international wines designed to showcase the diversity of global winemaking.

The wine list will be broken down evenly into Adelaide Hills wines, Australian sourced wines and international wines with Doyle mentioning plans to showcase wine brands and varieties from all over the world.

“Wine is often seen as elite.

“If you don’t like the wine, that’s fine, It’s not about being right, it’s about figuring out what you enjoy. If you know what you like, you already know something about wine.

“We want the space to feel like a bunch of friends hanging out,” Doyle said.

Bottle Shock is an extension of the pair’s successful YouTube channel, Wine for the People, which has built a global community of wine lovers through approachable education. Their ethos has always been about breaking down the barriers surrounding wine culture and making it accessible to everyone and Bottle Shock is the manifestation of that vision.

“Wine can feel intimidating when you’re starting out, but it shouldn’t be. Four years ago, I didn’t know anything about wine, and now I’m seen as a wine expert. It’s all about taking that first step.

“Bottle Shock is about discovering wine on your terms and having a damn good time doing it,”Doyle said.

The venue will also offer wine-plus experiences including wine paired with comedy, music, and art, creating a social atmosphere that is about more than just drinking.

Doyle sees Bottle Shock as the kind of place you’d go for a casual night out with friends or as a fun date spot somewhere that offers an experience rather than just a drink.

“It’s the kind of place you can go instead of a paint-and-sip or maybe it’s a wine and comedy night, or a live music session. It’s about creating an environment where people feel comfortable exploring wine without the pressure,” Doyle said

The launch of Bottle Shock marks a major milestone for the team who have steadily built their reputation through Unico Zelo’s innovative approach to winemaking and Wine for the People’s global reach.

Bottle Shock is set to shake up Adelaide’s wine scene. It’s about to get a whole lot more exciting.
