Prospect Road’s dining scene has welcomed another new addition, this time bringing bold Mexican flavours, fresh South Australian produce and plenty of tequila-ready energy to the strip.
Picoso Mexican Bar y Cocina is now open at 89 Prospect Road, Prospect, serving a contemporary take on Mexican food built around shared plates, house-made elements and a menu that sits somewhere between casual dining and refined restaurant cooking.
Meaning “spicy” in Spanish, Picoso takes inspiration from traditional Mexican flavours and techniques while giving them a lighter, modern edge.
Leading the kitchen is Head Chef Oliver Luxton, who arrives with more than a decade of experience across restaurants in London, New Zealand and Australia.
Luxton began his career at London’s The Providores & Tapa Room at just 17 before becoming Sous Chef at two-hat New Zealand restaurant Pescatore. After moving to Australia, he joined the opening teams at Sydney’s one-hat restaurants The Charles Grand Brasserie & Bar and Raja.
Most recently, Adelaide diners may recognise him from Restaurant Botanic, where he worked as Head Chef under Executive Chef Jamie Musgraves.
“The menu is bold, traditional Mexican with a modern edge,” Luxton says.
“It’s rooted in classic flavours like chilli, smoke and acid, but approached in a lighter, more refined way.”
Designed for sharing, Picoso’s menu heroes locally sourced South Australian produce across raw seafood, tacos and larger dishes.
Start with ceviche blanco, chicken carnitas or choose from pork and Baja fish tacos before moving into substantial plates designed to land in the middle of the table.
There’s aged mole poblano with braised short rib, whole roasted local fish with green salsa and carne asada ranchera, alongside dishes that reinterpret Mexican classics.
The Mushroom Oaxaca Tlayuda brings together earthy flavours, smokiness from the grill and Oaxaca-inspired elements, while smoked pumpkin butter served with tortillas turns something seemingly simple into a combination of smoke, spice, sweetness and richness.
Fresh corn tortillas are made in-house, complemented by a rotating selection of salsas and sides.
The venue itself carries that same energetic approach.
Outside, arched windows, striped umbrellas and a warm, street-facing setting make the most of Prospect Road, while inside, soft pink tones and tiled finishes surround a long bar designed to take guests effortlessly from drinks into dinner — and potentially back to drinks again.
Restaurant Manager Kirstiin Luxton says that relaxed progression is exactly what Picoso is designed to encourage.
“One plate turns into two, another round lands on the table and before you know it, the table is full and the night has taken on a life of its own,” she says.
It arrives as Prospect Road continues its transformation into one of Adelaide’s increasingly busy suburban dining strips, with new hospitality venues joining growing residential development throughout the precinct.
For Picoso, the aim is to add something a little different to that mix: big flavours, good drinks, shared tables and Mexican food that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
