A new café on Hutt Street is set to become Adelaide’s favourite Greek paradise.

Meli, is your one-way ticket to the sun-drenched laneways of the Aegean, no passport required. Meaning “honey” in Greek, Meli delivers all the sweet, slow, sun-kissed vibes of kicking back on a Greek island during a European summer, but right in the heart of the city.

Founded by a close-knit group of six cousins with deep roots in Cyprus and the Greek Islands of Rhodos and Kos, Meli is a true family affair.

After growing up on recipes passed down from their yiayiás and pappoús, the cousins have taken those beloved flavours and given them a playful, modern twist, all while honouring the spirit of Greek hospitality.

Co-founder Anthony Nicola, a familiar face on Hutt Street’s hospitality scene after a stint at Mascavado explains how much the foundation of Meli means to him and his family.

“We’ve wanted to do this since we were kids. Meli is more than a café, it’s a way for us to celebrate and give back to our ancestors and keep their spirit alive.

“We want to capture that feeling of being around the dinner table with your family, getting carried away with stories and laughter. For us, this is the most comforting experience in the world, ” Mr Nicola said.

Meli’s menu is Greek street food like you’ve never seen it. Think: classic dishes, reimagined in sandwich form. Crusty ciabatta or sourdough stuffed with slow-roasted lamb, Cypriot lukaniko sausage, grilled eggplant, Greek meatballs, or chicken souvlaki, each layered with cheeses and sauces inspired by the homeland, and made fresh to order.

From a saganaki sandwich (yes, four cheeses fried into a golden melt) to the already-talked-about moussaka sandwich, these are bold, crave-worthy creations. There’s also a custom Pastichio Pie, and the already iconic Yiros Sausage Roll this is Greek-Australian fusion at its finest.

Meli is just as serious about its drinks as it is its food. You’ll find traditional Greek coffees, freddo cappuccinos and lattes, and even a Whipped Honey Freddo, made with thyme-infused honey straight from Kalymnos, an ingredient featured across the menu.

The café itself is a stunning nod to the Greek isles, crazy paving floors that mimic the winding paths of Santorini, sunny yellow umbrellas lining Gillies Street, and a fit-out designed to transport you straight to a seaside village.

Meli is more than a place to eat, it is a place to gather. The team hope it becomes a hub for connection, a space where older and younger generations come together to share in culture, food, and community.

So whether you’re stopping by for a kafé with friends, indulging in a fusion sandwich, or just soaking up the sunshine under an umbrella, Meli invites you to slow down, connect, and enjoy a little slice of Greece, right on your doorstep.
