Adelaide’s dumpling lovers have a new destination to explore, with New Shanghai bringing its acclaimed Shanghai-style Chinese dining experience to Burnside Village.

The proudly Australian, family-owned restaurant is renowned for its handcrafted dumplings, authentic recipes and theatrical dining spaces inspired by the glamour of 1930s Shanghai. Its arrival further strengthens Burnside Village’s position as one of Adelaide’s leading retail, dining and lifestyle destinations.

Spanning approximately 304 seats, the impressive new venue combines a main dining room, dedicated gin bar, live dumpling theatre, three private dining rooms and an elevated outdoor terrace.

At the heart of the experience is a fully glazed dumpling theatre, allowing diners to watch New Shanghai’s trained chefs hand-fold the restaurant’s signature xiao long bao and buns. The theatre celebrates the care and craftsmanship behind every dumpling while adding movement and energy to the dining room.

The menu brings together New Shanghai favourites including xiao long bao, prawn dumplings with peanut sauce, pan-fried pork buns and Shanghai-style braised pork belly. Diners can also enjoy handmade dim sum, open gua bao, claypot classics, kung pao chicken, stir-fried noodles, traditional Chinese stir-fries and fresh live seafood.

Weekend yum cha will provide another reason to gather, with a selection of signature Shanghai soup dumplings, buns and shared dishes available for leisurely weekend dining.

Burnside Village Centre General Manager Jodie Kannane said New Shanghai brought a fresh sense of theatre, flavour and energy to the centre’s dining precinct.

“With chefs hand-folding dumplings before your eyes, immersive 1930s Shanghai-inspired interiors and a menu designed for sharing, it is set to become a must-visit destination for food lovers and a standout new experience for our customers,” Jodie said.

The restaurant’s bold design draws on the Art Deco character of 1930s Shanghai and the city’s historic Bund waterfront. Rich red and green tones are paired with brass and gold detailing, while references to the Shanghai skyline are traced through tiles and illuminated features.

The Bund, the venue’s dedicated Shanghai gin bar, has been designed with its own distinct identity. The bar offers signature gin cocktails, a curated gin and tonic selection, classic cocktails and a wine list celebrating South Australian producers. It will cater for after-work drinks, happy hours and special events, as well as pre-dinner cocktails.

Three private dining rooms take inspiration from a traditional Shanghai apothecary, featuring medicine-drawer joinery, distressed antique mirrors and marble lazy susans. The rooms can be opened into one another to accommodate larger groups and celebrations.

An outdoor terrace seating around 74 guests provides an open-air setting for drinks or a long shared lunch with elevated views.

New Shanghai franchise partner and experienced Adelaide restaurateur David Wang said the restaurant had always been about bringing people together over incredible food.

“To bring New Shanghai to Burnside Village, in the heart of Adelaide’s east, is a genuine privilege,” David said.

“We have created somewhere people can drop in for dumplings with the family, settle in for a long lunch, or come just for a gin at The Bund.”

For those wanting to continue the experience at home, a Chinese deli counter offers handcrafted dumplings, festive pastries and ready-to-eat small dishes to take away.
